Hi, Tony. I ran across this post online again and wondered if you'd had a chance to visit Holy Covenant UCC (on Harris Blvd). If you come to visit, I'd love to meet you.
I'm still attending HC and enjoying it a great deal. People have all sorts of preferences when it comes to church services, and I appreciate how you gave a feel for the churches in your post. I'd describe Holy Covenant as a traditional church setting with nontraditional church thinking. There's a real mix of LGBT families and straight allies, and the comittment to LGBT social justice issues (as well as other social justice issues) is very strong.

Most of the time I do a sitting meditation in silence and find that to be very effective. However, I love my DAVID PAL mind machine which is a brainwave entrainment device that uses flashing lights and tones to alter my brainwave state. Apparently, when we meditate we are mostly in Alpha or Theta and most mind machines will help accelerate the time it takes to get to that state. I think for most people it would take 15 minutes to reach Alpha state with light goggles and sound. If you are just using a sounds only CD it may take longer to reach a deep Alpha State. Personally, if you are using sound only, I would recommend the Neuroprogrammer 3 Software which you can run on your computer and make your own CD's with different brainwave entrainment sounds.

The risks of using a mind machine with flashing lights is the possibility of a seizure if you are photo-epileptic or if you have any heart problems. I think the sounds only CD's and software are probably OK but I am not a doctor or expert on the risks of using them. I have never used Equisync but I have tried Hemi Sync and they probably very similiar.

Isn't it wonderful how different everyone is and how each of us is on our own unique path to finding our individual truth. Self help books have led me to finding the answers from within when before I was looking outside myself. Spiritual books, affirmations and prayer nourish my soul and meditation is the vehicle to reach it. Tony, with all your experience with various meditation modalities. What do you think of the many commercial products out there claiming to accelerate the meditation process to higher and greater levels? Do they work? And if they do, is one better than the other? Is there any potential risk in using them? What do you think of EquiSync?

I began attending Holy Covenant United Church of Christ 2 years ago, after a 25-year separation from church life altogether due to painful experiences related to my sexual orientation. Holy Covenant declared itself officialy lgbt "open and affirming" a decade ago. I have found the congregation to be extremely welcoming in all respects, very diverse and very supportive of all its attenders, regardless of orientation or gender identity. I also enjoy the rich diversity each Sunday--young children (from both traditional and non-traditional families), older folks, a mix of ethnicities and the full range of L G B & T. The church is also very involved in many types of social justice issues, as well as the environment. I encourage anyone to visit. http://www.holycovenantucc.org/

The "Truth" does not exist except in our minds. Furthermore, how does one define the "Truth" as it can mean many things to different people. One man's "Truth" is another man's "Non-Truth".

If you are wanting to go to a Christian church that has a predominantly gay community. I would suggest MCC church in Charlotte. Almost everyone is gay including the preacher and they definitely won't "look down" on your sexuality. Whether or not you like the services is a different matter and you just need to attend a couple of times to decide.

For a spiritual but non-denominational feel good experience, I would try the Spiritual Living Center of Charlotte. The preachers are both gay and the congregation is mixed. However, it is not a Christian church and focuses on many ideas in "The Secret" using Religious Science.

Try MCC first and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Tony

Thanks for posting this information. I have been trying to find a church that would accept me for who I am and wouldn't look down on my sexuality. If you still utilize this blog, would you mind sharing any additional info you have come across with respect to gay friendly churches in the area? The search has been so tough because I can't find everything I want...but I refuse to go to a Southern Baptist church again--I did that for 18 years and I'm over it :) Thanks again!

Howie,

Did you even read the article?

Directly from the article above:

"For some, Buddhism has become an organized religion just like any other religion, with beliefs, ceremonies and rituals. However, the original Buddhism, as taught by the Buddha, was all about personal transformation, and not about religion at all.

This is what makes fundamental Buddhism compatible with other religions; that there are no requirements of belief involved. It is completely experiential, and deals with life and the problems of life directly. It addresses the reality that we all experience stress, and answers all the questions surrounding this stress. Buddhism also lays out a logical plan to end this stress forever."

Very well written and so true. I often wonder when enlightenment became a commodity to be sold by self-proclaimed gurus. More often than not these 'teachers' are simply ego-obsessed individuals whose narcissism somehow deludes them into thinking that they're spiritually advanced... so much so, in fact, that they have no difficulty in convincing others of their superior spiritual development. Enlightenment is an elusive little gem, isn't it? The more we try the more frustrated we become. And, truly, who has actually achieved it other than the great spiritual leaders of the past? Those that have are probably not talking about it and they are certainly not selling their wisdom to others as a method of aggrandizing their egos. I agree, let it go.

I have used Hemi-Sync CD's in the past. Hemi-sync was developed by Bob Monroe who was a pioneer in brain wave entrainment and Obe's (Out of body experiences). I was fortunate to meet Bob Monroe at his instititue in the late '80's and spent a day at the Monroe Institute retreat in Virginia. They are very passionate and honest about what they do. Their website is http://www.hemi-sync.com/.

Yes, I see what you mean. I guess you could try it out if they offer a money back guarantee. Also, unless the claim of relieving depression is scientifically proven through controlled studies I would disregard them. There seems to be alot of paid reviews going around. Also, I have a free one you can download. I make no claims other than it helps me relax. You can listen to it or download it at http://www.vuvee.com/relaxation-and-meditation-made-easy/

I've been searching various forums for info on these meditation programs, and on 4 or 5 of them I see the exact review from above from annita pieroni ALL from august 7th or 8th. This suggests it is a paid review from the Equisync co, and can be summarily dismissed. That being said, I may try it out anyway and hope they honor their money back guarantee if it doesn't work.. or doesn't work well. I would treat ALL internet reviews/comments with EXTREME skepticism if I were you.

This is an interesting theory that I will certainly give some thought to. I know I am certainly tired of looking for what you speak of and even more tired of never finding it and then punishing myself for not being able to change.

I am glad it worked well for you. I prefer using my DAVID PAL because it has many different sessions and light goggles. However, if anyone else is considering buying CD's I would recommend the Neuroprogrammer 2 instead. I use the software at work and it has 20 or more real time sessions or you can burn your own CD from them. It is a much better value than buying single CD's that may or may not work. However, if you find something that works stick with it!

Great review.

The emWave technology is now available for the Macintosh.

See http://www.emwavemac.com for details.

The emWave technology has four challenge levels. It's relatively easy for many people to get a green score at the two low challenge levels, but it takes more practice at the two high levels. Experienced meditators have called it a "monkey mind detector" as it's very sensitive to a loss of focus at the higher challenge levels.

Just wanted to let you know -- at least during my experience visiting your site, http://www.vuvee.com/goal-setting-and-affirmation-software-reviews/
the entire right toolbar was going ape-shit because "quote of the day" was moving at several quotes per second, each quote differing in size, making the whole right toolbar unbearable.

It kept me from reading your site -- I physically could not do it. Thought you should know.

Thanks for the great review! I just wanted to add that the FDA has made clear that US manufacturers of light and sound devices cannot make health related claims without first gaining FDA approval. We looked into this, they require studies with at least 400 participants, and the over cost for approval would be more than $1 million. David Siever lives in Canada, which has much laxer regulation, and so he can report on positive health findings. Our own machines have been used in a number of clinical studies, with positive results, but, alas, we can't share them without crossing the FDA 'line'.
Regards,
Robert Austin

You can download if for free. Just right click on the download link and "save target as" to your hard drive. It is an mp3 file so you can play it on your ipod or burn a cd from it.

I added a download link. In windows right click and use "save as" to save it to your hard drive. This is an mp3 file and will play with just about any program like Itunes, or Windows Media Player. You can also put it in your Ipod or other portable music player.

Actually, it is more than music because it had embedded brainwave entrainment tones to guide the listener's brain to an Alpha state. Boosting alpha brain wave activity is a great way to enjoy the feeling of relaxation and helps in learning and creativity.

This is a marvelous post that reminds people to read between the lines of their feelings. Our bodies, minds and spirits are always sending us messages. It is up to us to evolve to be more aware of what is unfolding.

It is kind of you to remind people they have alternative ways of experiencing the physical world. Music is a wonderful means of exploring and awakening the senses. It can evoke peace and tranquility. We always have choices about how to think, feel and live.
